Ryan Jones Catalyst Award
Heather and Sara Jo with Doug Johnson

Heather and Sara Jo with Doug Johnson

I want to offer my congratulations to our Co-Chairs Heather Schneider and Sara Jo Dickens, who were both awarded the Ryan Jones Catalyst Award at the 2009 Cal-IPC Symposium. The Ryan Jones Catalyst Award is awarded to individuals for creatively spearheading actions or creating partnerships that make exceptional progress in protecting California from invasive plants. Named for Ryan Jones, an incredible artist and youth leader for the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, who died much too young in 2008.

I have been working with Jo and Heather since the beginning of the Student Chapter and both are self motivated students who genuinely enjoy the work they put into Cal-IPC. They set a great example for the rest of us members and have the ability to keep us focused and working towards our greater goal of expanding the Student Chapter across the state.

The Cal-IPC Student Chapter only makes up a small part of their energy at UCR, but they have helped create an environment where we can share skills and ideas, we have been able to establish a functioning group that is committed to working with weed managers, academics, and citizens across the state, while still performing their personal research at a high level.
