The California Invasive Plant Council would like to have student representation on its Board of Directors, which sets the organization’s vision and many of its activities. Because of constraints on student schedules, we have opted to make student members of the board a liaison position—allowing for one-year terms that coincide with the academic year (terms beginning the 1^st of June and ending the 31^st of May each year). For this first year, the term will begin after elections are held, and end on May 31^st of 2011. Detailed responsibilities for this position are posted at the bottom of this email.

There will be two student liaison positions, one from southern California (including the following counties: Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo,  Santa Barbara, Ventura), and one from northern California (all other counties).

We are now accepting nominations for student liaisons (nominations are due August 15^th, 2010).

There are two options for nomination:

1. Nominate a candidate. Send an email to veviner@ucdavis.edu, stating who you’d like to nominate, their contact information (email address, academic institution, phone number), and the reason you feel they would be a good candidate. The Cal-IPC board will follow-up with these nominations and request a short biography from interested nominees.

2. Self-nomination. Send an email to veviner@ucdavis.edu, containing your name, academic institution, email address and phone number. Also include a short biography (300 words maximum).

Once the nomination process closes, the Cal-IPC board will compile the candidate list and their statements, which will be posted to all student members through the Google Groups tool. This posting will be accompanied by instructions for voting. Voting will be open to all students who are members of Cal-IPC, and each student can vote for 1 candidate to be the Northern California representative, and 1 candidate to be the Southern California representative.

“Job Description” for Cal-IPC Student Liaisons to the Board

The Cal-IPC Board of Directors (BOD) has primary responsibility for governance—setting the organization’s vision, maintaining financial viability, and monitoring operations. The BOD serves the organization’s membership. The organization offers directors an opportunity to make meaningful contributions to our mission, while growing professionally. Because of constraints on student schedules, we have opted to make student members of the board a liaison position—allowing for one-year terms that coincide with the academic year (terms beginning the 1^st of June and ending the 31^st of May each year).

There will be two student liaison positions, one from southern California (including the following counties: Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo,  Santa Barbara, Ventura), and one from northern California (all other counties).

Student liasions  are expected to:

• Know and effectively articulate Cal-IPC’s mission, goals, policies, and programs;
• Represent Cal-IPC to the greater community of California wildland weed workers, serving as a Cal-IPC ambassador by:

-        introducing oneself as a liaison to the board in appropriate venues,

-        speaking about Cal-IPC’s work when given the opportunity,

-        distributing newsletters, weed lists, and other materials, and

-        identifying opportunities for Cal-IPC to enhance its work through collaboration with other groups and projects (particularly with student groups);

• Attend BOD meetings- a student liaison is required at each of the four board meetings  per year, and the 2 student liaisons can coordinate which meetings will be covered by which liaisons (travel for the BOD meetings will be covered by Cal-IPC)
• Participate in at least one BOD committee and the monthly conference calls associated with that committee (committee can include the Symposium committee)
• Take an active role in planning and running the annual Symposium;
• Participate in setting strategic goals, assessing performance, and establishing organizational policies;
• Participate in choosing and supporting BOD officers ,while also helping to nominate and cultivate new directors and student liaisons;
• Participate in Cal-IPC’s fundraising activities (unless disallowed by board members’ employer)
• Participate in hiring and periodic evaluation of Cal-IPC’s Executive Director, and supporting staff as appropriate;
• Avoid conflicts of interest, and maintain confidentiality when necessary;
• Work with other directors and staff in a friendly and professional manner.

Cal-IPC provides its Board Members with:

• Directors & Officers liability coverage;
• Notice and minutes of all BOD meetings;
• Relevant information to conduct duties as a director;
• Reimbursement for reasonable expenses in conducting Cal-IPC business;
• Updated financial statements and other information as needed and requested;
• Respect for and appreciation of your time.
